A concept for a completely new interior design was developed for a traditional flat in the Foners neighbourhood of Palma de Mallorca. The classic division of rooms along a corridor was broken up and instead an elongated, central living and dining area was created, which connects to both terraces and allows light and views across them as well as access to them. The adjoining bedroom, which is also connected to the eastern terrace, is separated from the living area by a sliding glass wall, creating a generous sequence of rooms. The bathroom in turn has an open connection to the bedroom. Curtains provide the desired privacy. A separate guest room with its own bathroom can be accessed from the entrance corridor and is orientated towards an atrium.

The central living space is characterised by a white, sculptural figure that integrates all functions: kitchen and cooking island with extractor bonnet, dining table, sofa landscape as well as direct and indirect lighting. The result is a continuously framed space with a variety of perspectives that creates a contemporary, Mediterranean atmosphere. This atmosphere is supported by the sun-yellow colouring of the surrounding wall, which contrasts with the view of the blue sky over Mallorca. The all-round indirect lighting is complemented by spotlights and a light sculpture.

On the premises of Heidestraße No. 46-52, a detached industrial hall, a former motorbike workshop, has been converted into a spinning studio with an urban indoor cycling concept. Cycle Room Berlin is an extension of CFM CrosssFit Mitte Berlin by Lars Runne, which has been located in a neighbouring hall on the site for years.

Cycle Room Berlin’s hall is two-storey in one part, but single-storey in the larger part over a clear height of 6 metres. Fifteen spinning bikes have been installed in the hall for use as a spinning studio. The rooms on the upper floor serve as back of house. The hall itself is at ground level and has two exits and a sliding gate, each of which leads directly to the outside.

Cycle Room Berlin offers urban rhythm and the pulse of Berlin in one of the last commercial areas in Europa City.

design and planning for reshaping and extension of an engineers’ office

For the Berlin branch of Buro Happold a design concept and planning have been developed in order to reshape and redesign the existing office area as well as for an extension in the attic floor above: The existing work environment has been enlarged altogether and at the same time drastically enhanced – design-wise and functionally.

Under the key word ‚engineering is pioneering’, an environment has been created – inspired by associations from the development of human flight – that radiates lightness and is enriched by wing-like elements. An earth-coloured flooring creates grounding and continuity.

The open office spaces have been enhanced by additional conference rooms, smaller spaces for meetings and retreat, seating opportunities, pin boards, shelves and tables for plans. Special attention has been paid to an attractive recreation area in the attic floor with kitchen, coffee high table, lunch table, library seating stairs and a recreation and thinking space. This area of the office can also be used for internal and external events like lectures and parties.

design, planning and tendering for a cardiological practice for aPLEX GmbH

The classical space allocation plan of a medical practice has been transformed into a new spatial concept. The circulation area is merged in a widening and narrowing space continuum that embraces the reception, two waiting areas, the lavatories and laboratories as well as the patient archive. The archive is completely contained within 32 meters of room-high, built-in cupboards, in intensive red. In the corner of the building, which is lit from two sides, the waiting area is turned into a patients’ lounge. Here the archive wall is continued formally and in terms of colour in the velour, polygonal, red seating bench. Vis-à-vis stands the reception counter which is varnished in pearl-orange and shaped with oblique edges that enhance the dynamic of the entire space. Beyond the red cupboard-walls, the consulting rooms and surgeries stretch out along the facades. The fronts of the cupboards are imprinted with an enhanced reproduction of a historical hand-drawn network of veins. In contrast to the consulting rooms, which are kept in white and grey, the reception, waiting and circulation areas are colored in a friendly and stimulating composition of strong, dark red, light yellow and different shades of orange. 

design and planning of the central staircase of a department store for HSH architects

The department store Elkor in Riga gained a strong impulse, which brought about a new identity through the redesign of its entrance and circulation area. The commodity groups that are offered on the individual floors are better connected through new lines of sight. Panoramic lifts and openings that have been cut into the existing stairwell allow vistas between the department store levels. The openings can also be used for displays and presentations. A light ceiling on the ground floor guides the way from the entrance to the central staircase and is continued in the light walls around the stairs. The old flights of stairs have been replaced by a steel structure of massive, bronze-painted stair strings, which wind between the light walls. Steps and stair landings are covered with red glass mosaic tiles from Bisazza. On each floor, the stairs are connected to a walkabout, which has been planned by the project-related partner office in Riga.

Special services are available at advisory desks on the upper floor.

The typographic arrangement of literary fragments from literature for and about the stage introduces the stage as a space of individual imagination. ‘Acoustic spots’ that whisper like a hidden prompter can be heard only in particular seating situations, surprising you with audio selections from the current programmes. In selected spots you can also hear an extended repertoire of audio texts on the topic of the stage.

design and planning for the conversion of an old shed into a living space

An old shed, which has been used as a goat stall, bakery, wash house and garden shed in its time, was developed as a living space for a sculptress. The lower level, which had been divided into three spaces on an area of less than thirty square metres, was turned into one larger space by removing the internal walls: hall, kitchen and sofa corner with a heating stove are mixed together. The walls in the back part of this level, which is surrounded by the garden higher up, were extended in order to create a bathroom and box room. The upper level, which had been given a new, extended roof timbering ten years earlier, kept its form and size. By adding three skylights, a light-filled bedroom and work space were created. The stairs that connect the two levels develop from the floorboards of the upper level and protrude as a corpus of dark wood through to the lower level, where they stand on orange linoleum. Dark wood and orange surfaces are also to be seen in the kitchen corner, which is lit with daylight through a glass panel in the floor of the upper level. The corpus of the stairs serves at the same time as a larder, guaranteeing the optimal use of the small space. The spatial conception, the sculptural shape of the stairs, the choice of materials and colours as well as maximising the exposure of the internal space to its surroundings through the additional use of glass have lead to the spaces flowing into each other – even between levels. In consequence, the small shed appears surprisingly broad and spacious.
